There has been a veterinary practice on the Milehouse site in Plymouth for over 75 years. Initially it was a large animal practice, treating horses and farm animals in a wide area, covering Cornwall, the lower margins of Dartmoor and part of the South Hams.

Mr Hodinott ran the practice before World War II and he was joined by Mr White in 1950. In 1951 the practice was called “Hodinott & White”. In 1959 Mr Hodinott ceased practising and Mr J D Parkinson came from the Yorkshire Dales to join Mr White. Mr K R Watson joined the practice in the early 1960s and the practice was renamed Parkinson & Watson in 1962.

Mr Watson developed the small animal aspect of the practice. Mr JS Parkinson joined the practice in 1976 as an assistant, as did Mr F Bolton. Branch surgeries in Plympton and Plymstock were acquired in 1979 from the late Fernley Slee. Mr Watson retired in 1993 and is remembered with affection by staff and pet-owners. Robert Lusk joined the practice in 1983 shortly before Mr J D Parkinson retired. Robert Lusk left in January 2004. In January 2005 Elm Cottage merged with the Mannamead Veterinary Centre and became The Elm Veterinary Group. With this merger came a new partner for John – Mr Dick Moar.

In 2006 the practice was renamed “Elm Veterinary Centre”.
